Canoeing the River Wye

Ideal For Water Sport Lovers

The River Wye is one of the UK’s most beautiful canoeing rivers, and staying at The Pines Holiday Park puts you right at the heart of it. Whether you are a keen paddler or simply fancy trying something new on a calm stretch of water, you will find a choice of convenient launch points both upstream and downstream from the park.

Why the Wye is perfect for canoeing

Flowing past our peaceful, riverside setting, the Wye offers a mix of gentle sections ideal for beginners and more adventurous stretches for experienced paddlers. It is a wonderful way to soak up the scenery, spot wildlife, and see Mid Wales from a different angle. Many owners enjoy planning relaxed half-day or full-day trips, linking the various access points along this part of the river.

Launch points close to The Pines

You do not have to travel far from your holiday home to get on the water. There are several recognised launching points within easy reach of The Pines Holiday Park, allowing you to choose a route and distance that suits your confidence and experience.

Upstream, you can access the river at Llangurig, around 14 miles away, which is a popular starting point for longer paddles down through the upper Wye Valley. Closer still is Marteg at approximately 6.5 miles, followed by Rhayader at about 3.7 miles, giving you options for shorter sections or linking stages together over multiple days.

Perhaps the most convenient of all is Llanwrthwl Bridge, only around 200 yards from the park. This makes it especially easy to plan a relaxed outing straight from your base, or to finish a longer upstream paddle almost on your doorstep.

Downstream, Newbridge-on-Wye is roughly 4.8 miles away and is another well-used access point. A little further on, at about 10.1 miles, you will find Builth Wells, opening up longer touring routes for those who want to make a full day of it and enjoy the changing character of the river as it winds through the countryside.

Planning your canoe trip

Because this stretch of the Wye is so popular, there are local providers who can help with canoe hire, shuttles and guided trips if you prefer not to bring your own craft. Many owners choose to mix peaceful solo paddles with the occasional organised trip, especially when introducing friends or family to the river for the first time.

As with any river activity, conditions can vary with weather and water levels, so it is always sensible to check local forecasts, seek up-to-date advice and make sure your route is appropriate for everyone in your party.

Rules, regulations and river etiquette

The River Wye is a special environment, and there are specific rules and regulations in place to protect both the river and its users. These cover aspects such as access points, seasonal considerations, safety guidance and how to share the water respectfully with anglers and wildlife.

Before launching, we strongly recommend that all paddlers familiarise themselves with the latest information.

By following the official guidance, you will help to preserve this beautiful river for everyone who enjoys it, while making sure your own time on the water is as safe and relaxing as possible. From tranquil evening paddles to full days exploring the valley, canoeing is a memorable way to experience the landscape surrounding The Pines Holiday Park.
