Towns in Mid Wales

Explore Llandrindod Wells, Knighton, Presteigne & Builth Wells

Staying at The Pines Holiday Park puts you within easy reach of some of Mid Wales’ most characterful towns. Each has its own pace, history and charm, and together they make a lovely mix of days out, practical amenities and gentle exploring between walks and time on the River Wye.

Llandrindod Wells – The Victorian Spa Town

Llandrindod Wells is the largest local town centre and the place most owners head to for everyday essentials. Around seven miles from The Pines, it has a supermarket, banks and a good selection of independent shops and cafés, so you can stock up and enjoy a coffee while you’re there.

The town’s spa heritage is still very much part of its character. Llandrindod Lake is a peaceful spot for a stroll, with open views, birdlife and plenty of space to sit and watch the world go by. Just a short walk away, the Rock Park offers wooded riverside paths and traces of the town’s Victorian heyday, making it a pleasant place to wander on a quiet afternoon.

Knighton – “The Town on the Dyke”

Set close to the English border, Knighton is known as “The Town on the Dyke” thanks to its position on the ancient earthwork of Offa’s Dyke. It feels every inch a traditional market town, with a high street, an interesting art gallery and several antique shops to browse.

Knighton is also home to the Offa’s Dyke Centre, the main hub for this historic long-distance trail. Whether you’re planning a full day’s hike or simply want to learn more about the Dyke’s story, it’s a rewarding place to call into and adds a fascinating historic dimension to a visit.

Presteigne – Unspoilt Mid Wales

A few miles from Knighton, Presteigne is often described as one of the most unspoilt towns in Mid Wales. Its quiet streets, traditional buildings and slower pace make it a lovely place to wander, pause for lunch and get a feel for the old Radnorshire border country.

The town is also home to the Judges’ Lodging Museum, an award-winning recreation of Victorian life in what was once Radnorshire’s County Court. Step inside and you’ll find an immersive glimpse into the world of judges, servants and local society, carefully brought back to life room by room.

Builth Wells – Market Town on the Wye

Downstream in the Wye Valley, Builth Wells combines a busy small-town centre with a scenic riverside setting. The high street has a good mix of shops and places to eat, and the town often feels lively, especially on market days and event weekends.

Builth Wells has its own Golf Club for those who fancy a round with views of the surrounding hills. For walkers, there are spectacular paths along the banks of the River Wye, where you can follow the water, watch for wildlife and enjoy the changing light over the valley.

Exploring from The Pines

From the spa elegance of Llandrindod Wells to the borderland character of Knighton and Presteigne, and the riverside charm of Builth Wells, these towns offer plenty of variety within an easy drive of The Pines Holiday Park.
